Raja Shahriman Raja Aziddin (b.
1967, Kuala Kangsar) is one of the sculptors who is still standing strong in
producing sculpture work in Malaysia. A Fine Art graduate (1986-1990)
specialised in Sculpture from Universiti Teknologi Mara is moving forward in
producing sculpture with the root and identity of Malay culture.
His sculpture can be divided
into three evolution journeys; the decade of exploration from the early to end
of 1990s which witnesses the energy movement strength such as ‘Killing Tools’
series (1994), ‘Gerak Tempur’ (1996), ‘Api, Bayang dan Kemenyan’ (1998). The
transition decade was from 2000 to 2009; reveals the formation unity with ‘Semangat
Besi’ series (2001), ‘Nafas’ (2004), ‘Rhythm of 21st Century’
(2009). Meanwhile the strengthening decade from 2010 to 2019 translates the
subject mastery with ‘Kemelut Zaman’ series (2012), ‘Gembala Mana ‘O’ Si
Gembala’ series (2014) the recent is ‘Lok’ series (2019).
The latest work which was
produced since 2016 witnesses his preoccupation towards two things that becomes
his language in sculpturing, namely body figure and kris. In ‘Lok’ series which
took three years to complete, Raja Shahriman seems to pour all of his energy to
this series. It is like a beauty inspiration that is long kept in mind and now
the imagination is translated into space and form.
In ‘Lok’, he presents 25
torso sculptures embodiment with various kinds of forms and figures. Inspired
by the twist at the kris as the life challenge metaphor which is faced in
various forms and obstacles that come in various figures as the challenge faced
by the current people.
